Re: Student Breakfast, Adult/Staff Lunch Prices to Increase
PRESS RELEASE

Student Breakfast, Staff Lunch Prices to Increase

The Honeoye Falls-Lima School District wishes to inform parents, students and staff members that effective April 21, 2008, the school breakfast price will increase from $1.00 to $1.50 and the price for adult/staff lunches will increase from $3.00 to $3.50.  The student lunch price will not increase, and will remain at $2.10.  The price increases are due to increasing costs for food, fuel and efforts to increase the nutritional value of the foods served in our schools.

Recommendations to improve the nutritional value of school food were made by the Food Service Advisory Council.  The Council also recommended reverse pricing for ala carte menu items.

With a focus on wellness and healthy lifelong habits, the Food Service Department is making strong efforts to offer students healthier food choices.  Many people are not aware that the school lunch program is a self-sufficient program that is designed to cover expenses, and school lunch funds are independent from the District’s budget allocated for instruction.  The greatest challenge in making changes to improve nutritional value is finding healthy food options that can be offered at a reasonable cost.

Students have responded positively to the changes overall, and have even taken part in suggesting new ideas for healthier food options.  The changes that have been made thus far include daily availability of healthy salads and salad bars, pizza on whole grain crust, sandwiches made with whole wheat bread, whole wheat and spinach wraps, baked chips instead of traditional chips and the availability of bottled water.  Most recently, a pasta bar was added at the High School.  Students are also enjoying a brand new menu item - yogurt parfaits. In addition, the birthday treat menu has been expanded to include additional healthy options.

Meals may be prepaid on a weekly or monthly basis. Free and reduced price meals are also available to eligible students. The cost of these meals will remain at $.25. Guidelines and applications for the program are sent to all students’ homes in August.
