Below are highlights of what occurred at the
August 26, 2008 Board of Education meeting. Complete minutes
of the meeting will be posted on the Board of Education section of
the District’s website at www.hflcsd.org upon approval at the
subsequent Board meeting.
Capital Project Update: Work has continued
over the summer on the EXCEL funded capital project. As part
of the project, technology upgrades will be made to network cabling
and hardware. The plan for the technology segment of the
project is awaiting State Education Department approval.
Budget savings of $100,000 are predicted. The funds will be
used for classroom technology materials, as recommended by the
Teaching, Learning and Technology Committee. All work planned
for the summer, and some items not anticipated to be completed until
after the summer, were completed by the opening of school, including
improvements to High School science classrooms, new flooring, hot
water tank replacement at the High School, and front door security
and buzzer systems in three buildings.
Efforts to Reduce Fuel Costs: The
Wednesday afternoon after-school activity bus will no longer run to
help compensate for a $50,000 shortfall in fuel costs. Ending
this bus run will save the District approximately $10,000. The
District will study additional ways to cut fuel costs in the areas
of field trips and athletics. Schools have seen an 80%
increase in fuel costs in the last two years. HF-L will be working
with the Greater Rochester Quality Council as demo site for the
application of quality tools to further reduce fuel costs and we
have applied for grant funds to retrofit buses for increased fuelk
efficiency.
Elimination of High School Homerooms: In
an effort to continue to improve prompt arrival to school, High
School students will no longer attend homerooms and will report
directly to their first set classes each morning. A report on
student attendance shows a commendable overall rate of attendance at
96.02%.
School Report Card: The NYSED Report Card
for the 2006-07 school year has been released and can be accessed at
the following link: https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/District.do?year=2007&county=MONROE&district=260901060000.
Highlights include strong mastery levels in Math, LOTE, elementary
Science and increasing graduation rates. Middle School English
Language Arts mastery was targeted as an area for improvement.
Regarding subgroup performance, a separate report on Special
Education showed a significant increase in classified students
achieving Regents and Advanced Designation Regents Diplomas.
Superintendent’s Report: Superintendent
Dr. Michelle Kavanaugh thanked Honeoye Falls - Lima Village
officials for their efforts to place safety crosswalk signs on roads
in front of our schools. Tree cutting is expected to occur on
East and Main Streets during the first full week of school.
This should ultimately reduce power outages at the schools.
Although reports from Captain Siena of the Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office show police report incidences are low, Honeoye Falls Mayor
Rick Milne is scheduling a community meeting to discuss youth
congregating in Harry Allen Park due to ongoing complaints.
The District is anticipating a new record retentions grant of
$40,000. The District is monitoring student enrollment.
On average, class sizes are in line with
projections.
