Re: Bus Grant
PRESS RELEASE

HF-L Transportation Department Going Greener With New Grant

The Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District’s Transportation Department has received a grant for $24,000 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.  The grant will allow the department to reduce diesel emissions, fumes and smoke from busses by retrofitting catalyzed exhaust systems on 22 of its busses.

“Reducing bus emissions is one of the many ways the District is “going green,” said Dr. Michelle Kavanaugh, Superintendent of Schools.  “The improvements to air quality are not only healthier for our environment, they are also healthier for our children as they board and exit the busses.”

The catalyzed exhaust systems are stainless steel and anti-corrosive, and will also reduce expenditures for bus repairs.

The awarding of this grant also positions the district favorably for a potential future move to hybrid busses.  Currently, hybrid busses are more expensive than traditional school busses and the costs are not fully covered by grants.  The efforts being made by the district and the awarding of the grant demonstrate that HF-L is interested in “going green” with its transportation practices, giving us special consideration for any potential future funding for hybrid busses.

Special thanks to Head Mechanic Tom Edwards for his many valuable efforts to obtain this grant for the Transportation Department.
