HF-L Health and Physical Education Take the Prize
Each month for the past three years, Physical Education and
Health teachers have been gathering with Brian Donohue, Director of
Health, Physical Education and Athletics, for early morning work
session to redesign their curriculum. Their goal has been to
infuse more emphasis on helping students develop lifelong health and
wellness habits and to demonstrate responsibility for a safe and
healthy environment in their school and community.
Tell-tale signs of change can be seen as a result of
these efforts. A new Physical Education grading policy
requires students to show evidence of their mastery of the new
curriculum rather than sliding by on a pass/fail basis. A new
virtual fitness lab at Manor School, funded through a Greater
Rochester Foundation Grant, has been getting students involved in
tracking their exercise and becoming more physically active.
Additional funding for the Manor School Cafeteria has created a
welcoming ambience and introduced students to interactive video
instruction on nutrition while they eat. Service learning
projects have become frequent endeavors. The annual Wellness
Week and Family Fun Night have become well-attended community
events. Physical Education units on bicycling, skateboarding and
roller blading, encourage students to pursue non-competitive but
healthy physical activities. And, Health Classes explore
cutting-edge issues such as cyber-safety and the dangers of
sexting.
These hours of consternation over coffee and curriculum have had
an impact that has not gone undetected. In 2007, Honeoye
Falls-Lima Central School District was awarded a New York State
Healthy STARS Award for efforts to achieve measured improvements in
wellness through effective activities and strong wellness
policy. STARS stand for “School Teams Achieving Results
Successfully”.
At the annual Awards Banquet of the New York State Council of
Administrators for Health and Physical Education, Brian Donohue was
awarded the “Zone Award” for his leadership of the Physical
Education and Health Program at Honeoye Falls-Lima. Brian has
a Masters Degree from SUNY Brockport and an administration degree
from St. John Fisher. Superintendent Michelle Kavanaugh
commented, “Brian is an exceptionally compelling person as an
educational leader because he has such strong ethics, drive,
commitment and focus on students. He is deserving of the Zone
Award from his state professional association and is the force
behind the several successes we have had in our wellness efforts as
a district.”
