Hats Off to Cultural Diversity
Hat historian and HF-L community member, Stacey Miller, brought
her hats to school to showcase the exhibit she has collected from
her travels around the world. On Thursday, December 10th, the
Honeoye Falls-Lima High School library was transformed into a museum
setting as students in Language Other Than English (LOTE) classes
and the Foreign Exchange Club explored how hats tell a story of the
world's cultures. Stacey’s docent commentary created an awareness
and appreciation for students of cultural differences and shared
attitudes revealed through evolving hat attire. Hats
demonstrate status, cultural identity, religious affiliation, rites
of passage, professional role, and the occasional functional role of
just keeping the sun out of one's eyes. Her hats and stories
took students on a journey around the world. Eve Rubenstein,
Spanish Teacher, organized this learning opportunity.
The HF-L Central School District received a national Magna Award
from the American School Boards Journal in 2009 for ongoing efforts
to create diversity awareness. A total of 40 individuals from
the staff and local community have received annual Diversity Awards
from the Board of Education for promoting cultural awareness.
