HF-L Assets Committee
Assets at Work in HF-L

Building Assets

The community, school and family systems support positive youth development.  Working together, they promote good citizenship, encourage healthy decision making and offer opportunities for youth to make an impact on their world.  Comprised of representatives from each of these areas, the Honeoye Falls-Lima-Mendon Assets Committee meets regularly to plan and support activities that put youth first.

What are Assets?

  • Positive qualities valued in all people.
  • 40 developmental experiences and personality traits, broken down into eight qualitative areas
  • Attributes identified by the Search Institute, Minneapoils, MN, as important building blocks for an individual's self esteem and essential to positive adult development.  Click here to view the Search Institute's list of 40 developmental assets.

What are the eight Asset categories?

  • Support - from family, neighborhoods, teachers, coaches, clergy, trusted adult role models, etc.
  • Empowerment - community values and protects its youth
  • Boundaries and Expectations - community sets limits for behavior and holds high standards for youth's performance
  • Constructive Use of Time - a variety of programs and activities are available to youth
  • Commitment to Learning - youth participates fully in school work and activities; reading is important
  • Positive Values - caring, honesty, responsibility, respect, etc.
  • Social Competencies - resistance and conflict resolution skills, cultural awareness, tolerance, etc.
  • Positive Identity - youth has a strong sense of self and life purpose

Assets in Abundance

When youths possess many of the 40 developmental assets, they are less likely to participate in risky behaviors, such as:  drug or alcohol abuse, early sexual activity, violent or criminal behaviors.  Those with many asset characteristics experience high levels of school successes, are involved in their community, lead healthy lifestyles and encourage others to do the same.

Finding and Building Assets

Assets are alive and well in the Honeoye Falls-Lima-Mendon area.  Students and adults that participate in school and community activities/events are building and using assets.

  • Schools build assets by:  having teachers and staff available to students; allowing the school building to be used for school and community groups for activities; having a clearly outlined and followed school policy and procedure; sponsoring clubs, groups and sports for students; setting high standards for academic performance; etc.
  • Communities build assets by:  offering activities like scouting, YMCA events, community band, etc.; having a well organized and accessible library system; offering community service activities at locations such as Pinehurst, Bennicasa and local daycare centers; maintaining clean park; offering festivals, parades and carnivals, etc.
  • Businesses support assets by:  providing mentoring/shadowing opportunities for youth; offering paid work experiences; recognizing youth patrons; supporting school and community activities with a donation of time, goods or money, etc.
  • Homes build assets when:  youth's basic needs are net; study materials and location are available in the home; parents are available to listen to, talk with and encourage youth; parents role model their expectations for youth, etc.
