Asset Committee Meeting Notes 1/17/08
Skateboarding Update: High School student Quinn W. gave a brief
overview of the initiative he spearheading to host a skateboarding demo and, in
the long run, develop and improve skateboarding facilities in the
community. Students have indicated significant interest in developing a
skate park or area where they are permitted to skate in town. Quinn has
not yet heard back from the insurance company. Chris Gephart will assist
him in obtaining a response from the insurance company.
Concerns Over Youth Alcohol Use: 2007 graduate Megan F. spoke regarding
concerns over youth alcohol use, especially in light of the death of a former
student. Connie Morris-Pease spoke about the PTA’s efforts to bring in
guest speaker, Dan Davis, during Wellness Week. Mr. Davis speaks to youth
on the topic of substance abuse.
Youth Risk Behavior Survey: Youth Services Coordinator, Chris Gephart,
reviewed the Youth Risk Behavior Survey results. The group discussed the
results and how to communicate the results to parents, students, staff members
and community members. Dr. Kavanaugh shared the comprehensive efforts to
combat risky behavior in our youth. A task force is currently being formed
to address these issues.
SADD Simulated Crash: Youth Services Coordinator Chris Gephart informed
the group that SADD will be hosting their simulated crash this year the week
before prom.
Youth Boxing Update: A number of students attended the meeting to
discuss ongoing efforts to begin a youth boxing club.
Wellness Week: Athletic Director, Brian Donohue, discussed the upcoming
Family Fun Night that will be held on February 11 from 6-8:20 PM at the High
School. Ideas are being sought from students regarding additional
activities that can be part of the event.
Funding Requests: Superintendent Dr. Michelle Kavanaugh asked that
funding structure be added to the next agenda.
Bright Futures Program: Jerry Bennett discussed the bright futures
program which promotes abstinence until marriage.
Scholarship Fund: Megan F. suggested a scholarship fund be established
in honor of Devin Lurain, a former student who recently passed away.
Bracelets are currently being sold, and it was suggested that the proceeds could
be used to begin the scholarship fund.
