Assets Committee Meeting Notes 12/13/07
Wellness Committee Update/Wellness Week: Brian Donohue updated the
Assets Committee on the activities of the Wellness Committee. A number of
staff members participated in the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge. Wellness
Night plans were discussed. The Wellness Committee is looking for students
to host an American Heart Association fundraiser (Jump/Hoops for Heart).
Chris Carosa said youth groups and scouts may be willing to volunteer in this
effort. The Assets Committee will host a booth at Family Fun Night.
The Food Advisory Committee is a new committee charged with looking at the
nutritional value of our school lunch program. Contact Lance Seeber,
Director of Food Service, if you are interested in participating.
Youth Boxing: Board of Education member, Shawn Krest, introduced a
Youth Boxing proposal. A number of students are becoming interested in the
sport of boxing. Youth boxing emphasizes fitness and technique. This
would not be a traveling interscholastic team, but participants could attend
local tournaments. Should a group like this be initiated, a location would
be needed, as well as equipment, instructors/trainers, insurance/legal
requirements and grants to support funding. A number of students attended
the meeting to attest to their interest in promoting a youth boxing program in
our community. Socialization was brought up as another key factor in why
kids want to box.
Requests for Funding: Brad Templeton, Enrichment Specialist, gave an
update on Community Youth Court. $17,940 total in funding is needed.
The group is asking for $500 annually from the Assets Committee. This
money would be used for training. The PTA asked for funding to bring in
guest speaker, former athlete and addict, Dan Davis, to speak to the Middle and
High School students during Wellness Week. The cost of the program is
$1000. Chris Gephart, Youth Services Coordinator, said a subcommittee is
being formed to review the overwhelming requests for funding that are coming to
the Assets Committee.
Open Forum: Mendon Supervisor, Ian Mc Nabb, suggested a Communitywide
Wellness Initiative be developed to identify opportunities for kids and adults
to participate in athletics and wellness activities together. Honeoye
Falls Mayor, Rick Milne, says all municipalities and the schools need to sit
down and talk about our plans for the future, to best coordinate our efforts and
potentially incorporate some funding into the town/village budgets.
