HF-L Assets Committee Meeting Notes 2/12/09
Family Fun Night: Family Fun Night was again a great success.
This was the third annual event. An online survey was administered via
newsnotes email notification. Preliminary feedback indicates that families
enjoy and appreciate the event. Suggestions were made to have a map and/or
signs at the event so people know where the different activities are taking
place in the building.
Skateboard Event Update: Quinn was not able to attend the meeting;
however, the committee discussed how we can support Quinn in making this event a
reality before he graduates.
Assets Planning Guide: The committee reviewed the concepts of listening
posts, peer mentoring at the High School and sports mentors as well as volunteer
and service learning opportunities available to students.
Community Reads: This year, we’re reading the book Rules by Cynthia
Lord. The Community Reads Kickoff was held at the Wellness Fair. A
booth was set up with a display and activities to help people understand what it
is like to live with a disability. A Dance-a-Thon has been scheduled for the
evening of Cougar Creations from 8-10 PM in the Middle School Cafeteria. A
registration form is available on the District’s website. Students will
also be able to register in the Middle and High School Cafeterias from April
1-3. All proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics. A Kids on the
Block puppet show is being planned for grade 3 through the Red Cross. A
special guest appearance by JMAC is being planned, but details are not yet
available.
Day of Caring: The Assets Committee is seeking ideas for potential Day
of Caring projects, to be held in May (date TBD).
Community Sharing:
• The High School Student Advisory Council and Student Council Forum
groups are planning a bonfire for Fall Weekend 2009 and are making Adirondack
chairs for the High School Courtyard. • The Governor’s budget will have
a significant impact on County Youth Bureaus. Funding will be reduced and
it is in question whether the bureaus will be able to survive the
cuts. • The Boy Scouts breakfast and video received rave
reviews. • It was suggested that we hold a volunteer reception for
students who participate in service learning opportunities in our
community. • Town and Village officials reported that our new
Congressman Eric Massa recently met with students and parents at the Mendon
Community Center. He is excited to meet with more kids and plans to visit
our town on a regular basis on weekends. Community Youth Court recently
presented to the Mendon Town Board. Despite the struggling economy, the
Town will still receive the library grant of approximately $500,000. The
Town has contracted with an architectural firm, and focus groups will be held to
obtain feedback on the design of the library. The Town is looking for
interns on committees for planning, environmental conservation, parks and
recreation, historic preservation and library. The Library Committee meets
second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 PM at the Town Hall. Those
interested should contact Town Supervisor Ian McNabb. The Town is looking
into the Club 60 lunch program – a federally funded program to provide meals for
senior citizens. The Village of Honeoye Falls has seen a number of small
businesses move in, and looks forward to the arrival of Salvatore’s Pizza,
coming to corner of Main and Episcopal. A branch of Genesee Community College is
coming to Lima.
