Curriculum & Instruction

The Office of Curriculum and Instruction provides leadership, direction, and support to the district's academics.   The HF-L staff works collaboratively to review and revise curriculum, provide relevance in instruction and assessment, and align professional learning.

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction oversees the K-12 instructional program, assessments, adherence to State Education Department regulations, data warehouse reporting, residency, homeschool students, federal grants, program evaluations, and the work of the Instructional Leadership Council.   The Instructional Leadership Council meets bi-monthly to discuss the current status of our programming, review curriculum writing proposals, curriculum maps and review student assessment data.

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction also oversees the Technology Department, the Health, Physical Education and Health Department, Community Education, Professional Learning, Dignity for All Students (DASA), and the School Library program.

School Improvement Teams
According to Part100.11 of the NYS Education Department Regulations, "The purpose of school-based planning and shared decision making shall be to improve the educational performance of all students in the school, regardless of such factors as socioeconomic status, race, sex, language background, or disability."

The shared decision-making teams in HF-L are called School Improvement Teams or SITs.  The focus of this committee is on improving student learning as measured by common and state assessments.

SITs create yearly SMART goals and utilize their meeting times to work on these goals. The SITs are advisory to the Building Principal in determining budgetary allocations for the coming school year.

Curriculum Overviews

Each year, our teachers and administrators re-evaluate and update curriculum maps and programs. These "Year at a Glance" documents provide a quick overview of what students will study throughout the school year. Each document contains the main theme, topics covered under that theme, and a rough estimate of the approximate weeks of study for that theme. Themes are listed in the order they will be taught during the school year

Curriculum is under constant review by the district and the State Education Department. Once updates take place, we will apply them to the curriculum maps. Changes typically occur on a yearly basis.

We hope you find these documents useful in planning the school year with your child. If you have questions or comments, please call the Curriculum and Instruction Office at (585) 624-7015.
