National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent organization that certifies teachers who meet rigorous national standards for the age and content of the students they are instructing. This certification is the highest credential a classroom teacher can achieve.

National Board Certification requires applying teachers to complete a voluntary assessment program on their own time, which takes between 200 and 400 hours. The assessment program is designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. As part of the certification process, candidates complete 10 assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. The assessments include the teacher's knowledge of their subject area, teaching portfolios, student work samples, and a video of their work.
