From time to time, I tell people (prospective teaching candidates in particular) that Honeoye Falls-Lima is a public school district that has outstanding students, families, and staff. I realize it is a bit arrogant. Still, it is true that the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District has had a succession of outstanding years, allowing our professionals to focus on supporting our students and our caregivers and parents to focus on their families. As a school district we have not suffered as other districts have with major budget battles or internal distractions that often shift attention away from student achievement. Nor have we experienced the difficulties that others regularly encounter when changing their programs or defending their curriculum.
I know that we are not a perfect school system, that up close there is much that can be improved. Still, I am continuously impressed with the community-wide respect that we are afforded as educators. Taxpayers support us, parents encourage us, and the students, by and large, come to school daily, ready, and eager to learn. The absence of distractions and the respect the community holds for its scholars and for learning in general cannot ever be taken for granted.
I also routinely tell others that Honeoye Falls-Lima has enjoyed our success because the teachers, administrators, and support staff have all agreed to roll up their sleeves and go about their work in a serious and professional manner. As a result, the majority of our students are challenged across a broad spectrum of classes and well-planned extracurricular activities. This is made possible because of the staff’s collective work ethic and belief that HF-L students are capable—physically, emotionally, and intellectually—of achievement levels much higher than might be expected elsewhere. As a district, we do push our children academically, we expect them to behave properly, and we are willing to invest ourselves in helping them to understand everything from the basic rules of grammar to the complexities of human rights.
As another outstanding year of schooling comes to a close, I take this opportunity to thank the entire staff for its good efforts and hard work. We do make a difference in the lives of our students, and through them I believe we are making the world incrementally a better place for everyone.
