As part of our ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of every student and staff member in the HF-L community, we're pleased to share that our district is actively preparing to implement Desha’s Law, recently signed into New York State Education Law. Named in memory of 12-year-old Desha Sanders, the law requires all public schools to incorporate cardiac emergency response plans into both district-wide and building-level safety protocols. Effective September 1, 2025, schools must include sudden cardiac arrest procedures in emergency plans, and by January 20, 2026, districts must also ensure automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment is clearly marked, maintained, and staff are trained in CPR and AED use. These life-saving measures—aligned with national best practices such as those from the American Heart Association—are designed to enhance readiness during athletic events, school functions, and everyday routines. We're proud that our district is already updating our safety communications, conducting staff training sessions, and collaborating with local EMS to integrate these critical protocols. Together, we’re making our schools safer and better prepared to save lives.
