Congratulations to Abby F. on being a recipient of the BOE's Cougar Pride Award! Abby was nominated by Virginia Kukaj-Hartman & Amy Visca who noted the following, "Abby has also demonstrated incredible spirit and commitment through her participation in the Polar Plunge for the past two years. Her compassion and dedication to supporting the Special Olympics are clear in the enthusiasm she brings to the event each year. Abby doesn’t just take the plunge in the freezing water, she arrives fully dressed in fun costumes (this year, an inflatable polar bear), bringing energy and excitement that encourages others to get involved. Her willingness to support such an important cause while spreading positivity and school spirit makes her a wonderful example of leadership and kindness in our high school community. Celebrating a milestone for student voice and leadership 👏

The ROC2Change Student Summit on Race marked its 10th anniversary this week at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, bringing together more than 350 students from 40 schools across the region.

What began in 2016 with just 180 students from 10 schools has grown into a powerful, student-led movement—now hosting two summits each year and continuing to inspire young people to become agents of change in their schools and communities.

This year’s theme, “Celebrate. Belong. Persist.”, reflects the heart of ROC2Change’s mission: empowering students across differences in race, geography, and life experiences while elevating youth voices.

From exploring topics like implicit bias and privilege to building unity and understanding, these summits continue to spark meaningful conversations—and lasting impact.

Congratulations to Tadd Hilyard on being a recipient of the BOE's Cougar Pride Award! Hilyard was nominated by Nakisha Bacon, Annie Sturrup, and Andrea Schilstra who all nominated him individually. Sturrup noted the following, "I am nominating Tadd Hilyard for the Cougar Pride Award because of his exceptional dedication, professionalism, and unwavering support of our school community. Tadd consistently goes above and beyond his regular responsibilities to ensure that our classrooms are safe, clean, and fully functional. Whenever I have needed assistance—whether it was repairing my classroom easel, promptly addressing maintenance concerns, or thoroughly cleaning my room even while managing many other duties—he has responded with efficiency, care, and a positive attitude. One example that truly stood out was when he took the initiative to wash our classroom’s shared winter gear. This thoughtful act not only supported our students’ well-being but also demonstrated his deep commitment to creating a comfortable and welcoming learning environment. No matter how busy his schedule may be, he remains professional, kind, and approachable. His willingness to help, combined with his strong work ethic, contributes greatly to the positive culture within our school. Staff and students alike benefit from his dedication, reliability, and genuine care. Our school is a better place because of him, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition!" Bacon noted the following, "I would like to nominate our school custodian Tadd for this well-deserved recognition. He is an essential part of our school community and consistently demonstrates dedication that goes far beyond his job description. He is incredibly responsive whenever support is needed in the classroom. Whether it’s addressing maintenance concerns quickly, or ensuring classrooms are thoroughly cleaned, he approaches every task with care and efficiency. Even when he is clearly balancing many responsibilities, he makes time to help and never makes you feel like you are adding to his workload. His kindness and professionalism truly stand out. He treats staff and students with respect and always maintains a positive attitude. He plays a significant role in creating a welcoming, safe, and supportive learning environment. Our school runs more smoothly because of his hard work, reliability, and genuine commitment to helping others." Schilstra noted that "Tadd has gone above and beyond to help the first grade teachers upstairs recently. When we have called with an issue he immediately addressed the issue(s) at hand. He is such a positive influence and has a positive attitude every day. He is constantly on the go and supporting the needs of the building." #WeAreHFL

Congratulations to Virginia Steed on being a recipient of the BOE's Cougar Pride Award! Steed was nominated by student Griffin B. who noted the following, "I am nominating Ms. Ginny for the cougar pride award because, she has made the bus a safe, fun, and welcoming place to be, she lightens everyone's day, and makes waking up at the crack of dawn worth it. I am in seventh grade currently, but I still remember my first day of middle school. like many of my peers I was anxious, curious, and excited. But when those bus doors opened and Ms. Ginny greeted me with her kind gentle smile and told me, "Welcome Griffin, I'm your bus driver Ms. Ginny, and I'll be driving you to and from school." though those words are standard, it was the way she made the first thing you see on the first day of middle school warm, welcoming, and joyful. and that is what she does for all of her riders. If it wasn't for her kindness and her gentle soul I would not be able to say that the bus is just a vehicle, Because it is not just a vehicle it is a place where you are welcomed, and you have a feeling everything is going to be okay. And me and my other peers owe it all to Ms. Ginny. But it also is not just the atmosphere she creates, it is the conversations you can have with her, and also the laughs you can share. And I feel proud that I can say I couldn't ask for a better bus driver." #WeAreHFL

Congratulations to Tammy Pulver and Karen Queeno on being recipients of the BOE's Cougar Pride Award! Pulver and Queeno were nominated by Meghan McQuillan who noted the following, Read Across America Week at Lima Primary is like stepping into another world. Tammy Pulver and Karen Queeno spend an endless amount of time turning Lima Primary into the most magical place. They prepare, create, and build scenery and props to turn our hallways into pirate ships, the Wild West, Super Hero cities, Fairy Tale kingdoms…it looks like someone waved a magic wand and poof you are dropped into an alternate universe. They have gone above and beyond for years and years. The most powerful testament to this magic is the look of amazement on the students faces when they walk into the building on Monday morning. They left a regular looking school on Friday afternoon and returned on Monday morning to a jaw dropping, truly magical place. Thank you, Mrs. Pulver and Mrs. Queeno for fostering a love of reading and making us all feel like we are trapped inside the pages of a book that we never want to leave. Creating wonderment and awe is your Superpower! #WeAreHFL

Congratulations to Bob Jennejohn on being a recipient of the BOE's Cougar Pride Award! Jennejohn was nominated by the HF-L Nordic Team for consistently going above and beyond his duties, providing much more than just transportation. The team noted that, "every day when we enter his bus, we are greeted with a smile and willing assistance in helping us board our equipment. It takes a skilled and dedicated driver to navigate the treacherous climb to the summit of Bristol Mountain time and time again, yet Driver Bob does so with such joy and ease. His support for our team is unsurpassed. Regardless of the conditions, he is there for every race - standing in the frigid air to cheer on our team from the sidelines no matter what and cheering on all of us. Perhaps most touchingly, he took the time to write personalized, handwritten notes to each of our seniors for their final race. Driver Bob is a vital member of the HF-L community who makes our Nordic program truly special. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and heart he shares with us. We would not be who we are without you! #WeAreHFL
