Parents and Student-Athletes

Today we received the official news from Governor Cuomo that we were hoping would never come; the cancellation of school for the remainder of the year and thus the end of the opportunity for spring sports. Here is the official announcement from Section V:

While the emotions around this necessary decision are real, and it is ok to both feel and express them, the current status of the virus just would not allow the opening of school safely.

I realize this news is devasting, but know that as your athletic director I am extremely proud of your resilience. All of you have done a great job of staying positive and prepared during this pause. Class of 2020, no group has faced more adversity than yours. Not just with the cancellation of athletics, but other signature events as well. I will remember your class not for the opportunities lost, but instead for your exemplar response and your demonstration of our Crucial Four. We are working with varsity media to provide you the senior recognition you deserve.

It saddens me that this day has come and I feel for our athletes, families and coaches. All of you work extremely hard at what you do, and I am sorry the opportunity to compete this spring no longer exists.  I look forward to the day we return, and I am convinced we will come back even stronger.

In closing, I strongly encourage you to continue your commitment to maintaining the CDC social distancing guidelines. Your efforts, and sacrifices, have made a difference in our community.

I am available at any time to answer questions, hear your concerns, or take input. Email: brian.donohue@hflcsd.org

Mission Statement

The mission of the HF-L Athletic Program is to provide opportunities for our students to strive for excellence by creating an educational and competitive experience within an atmosphere of sportsmanship. We believe that interscholastic athletics can and should enhance the character of our students. Athletics provide an educational opportunity in which students can learn essential life lessons, beyond those that can be learned in the academic classroom. We believe the combination of athletics and academics enhances the quality of students' lives and expands their options for learning and growth.
